EXCELLENT Based on 30305 reviews Posted on Frances SVerified The best experience of my life The best four days of my life. Raul and Raul Benjamin are the most amazing guides ever, constantly telling us such interesting information and always making us life. They made sure we were happy, comfortable and enjoying ourselves. The admission fee was 1,700$, totally worth it. The crowd size was 12 of us and there was no one we really saw on the trek which was amazing. It is best for everyone I think, the hike is tough but it is worth it. We met amazing people and I woke up the day after the trip sad that we aren’t doing it again and again and again. This company are flawless, the food was out of this world. I don’t know how they managed to make such amazing dishes in a small tent but it felt like magic and we were all so grateful. Our guides were the absolute best and I have no complaints at all! Thank you so much.Posted on Edward CVerified A bucket list trek to Machu Picchu The most amazing 2-day trek we could’ve imagined. Lucio and Abraham were amazing guides and gave so much information about the sites along the Inca Trail. We were sad for it to be over. The hike felt like a real adventure. The accommodations and food were honestly luxurious compared to normal camping. Most of all, the views along the way made it so worth it. Seeing Machu Picchu without the journey wouldn’t have been the same.Posted on Luke DVerified We Laughed, We Labored, We Learned We enjoyed a challenging and rewarding 5-day trek thanks to the thorough and thoughtful team at Alpaca Expeditions! Teofillo was a superb chef; John was an attentive (and fast!) sous-chef / camp assistant / porter, and Soledad was the most patient, kind, and supportive guide we could have asked for, with a contagious passion for sharing the outdoors with her guests and a positive attitude that sets the right tone for the whole group. This is certainly a demanding hike but one that showcases the natural beauty of the Salkantay Pass and the history and culture of the archeological sites at Llactapata and Machu Picchu. We are very grateful to Sol and the Alpaca Expeditions team for an unforgettable first trip to Peru, and for all their communication before the trek that allowed us to be informed and confident from Day 0.Posted on James CVerified Life changing trip, amazing food, and best tour guide we could have We had a lovely time with Alpaca Expeditions on the Salkantay Trail. Our tour guide Soledad, our porter, and our chef are so good at their jobs and so attentive to our needs, always thinking of ways to make our lives easier like bringing us hot water in the morning and as soon as we arrive at the lodging each night. We have made great friends with everybody on the trip, and we can’t recommend this company and this trip more.Posted on Richard VVerified Just an amazing experience We had an amazing time with our guid Vituco whom worked really hard at making our experience enjoyable. He adapted very well to various people abilities, we never felt pushed. Not exactly a moderate hike, but if you are decently fit, we highly recommend! Just listen to the guide recommendations and you will be fine. Alpaca’ organization from pickup at hotel to drop off next day is just impeccable!Posted on ChrisVerified Wonderfull Inka Trail hike Experience with Alpaca What a wonderful trip. Sabi and his team led us through the 2D/1N Incas Trail trip. Every detail was prepared meticulously and worked out. The porters carried everything up the mountains, and the meals prepared by the cooks were restaurant quality, despite being prepared in remote campsites. The sites along the trail, and at Machu Picchu were incredible, Of course, but to enjoy them you need a team that has experience and can anticipate and solve any problems. Alpaca Expeditions does that superbly. For example, my girlfriend became exhausted on the long steep upward portion of the hike; both guides were totally cool and calming, assuring her that there was no hurry and giving her all the time she needed to rest. When we she got to the Sun Gate, it was all worth it! I can't recommend Sabi and Alpaca Expeditions enoughPosted on StavrinaVerified Sacred Valley and Matchu Picchu Tour Well organized with very communicative and helpful guides who explained in every detail all the history of the places we visited. We would have preffered a better quality food at machu picchu but all in all it was a great experience! Big thanks to our guides Rubin and David Condori Villanueva for one of the best experiences we had! Highly recommend!Posted on Nicolette LVerified Incredible experience must do What an awesome experience!! The tour was fabulous all around. Highly organized, communicative, trustworthy , and seamless. Our guide David Condori Villanueva shared interesting knowledge on the Inca culture and tips about navigating Peru. Not only that, but he was so kind checking in on us and even helped me find a place I can get an SD card for my camera. The sites that we visited were incredible and totally worth the trek. I’d recommend this tour to anyone and would definitely do another tour through this company if given the chance :)Posted on Victoria LVerified Excellent journey David Condori Villanueva was an excellent tour guide on our adventure through the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. He’s extremely knowledgeable about the Cusco region, organized with trip plans/ logistics, and proactive in reminding us what to prepare and pack! My siblings and I benefited from how well connected and experienced he is with local vendors/ suggestions and enjoyed our adventures, everything went so smoothly! For early March, we also got super lucky with practically no rain!! Thank you David for a memorable journey and to the team at Alpaca for working with us to coordinate this only a couple weeks in advance. We’d highly recommend to all travelers!Posted on ZimVerified Brilliant Inca Trail It was such a brilliant experience! My tour guide Luz was amazing and knew so many facts about history as well as the nature on the Inca trail. She was super encouraging and helpful with tips on how to catch your breath when the trail got tough. Luz made it such a wonderful experience. I throughly enjoyed the tour and will definitely be back again! The lunch on the trail was amazing aswell! So much variety and all traditional food.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. & Machu Picchu Tickets
Inca Trail Permits & Machu Picchu Tickets - How Do They Work?
Access to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu is strictly limited by the Peruvian government, booking is required through a licensed tour operator like Alpaca Expeditions. You cannot purchase an Inca Trail permit on your own.
Do I need a permit for the Lares Trek?
No special trekking permit is required for the Lares Trek. Unlike the Inca Trail, which has strict government-issued permits that sell out months in advance, the Lares route is open-access but still requires booking in advance.
Do I need a permit for Machu Picchu?
Yes. All treks, including the Lares, require a Machu Picchu entrance ticket for the final day. The most popular permit is for circuit 2 which are limited to 200 per day and sell out fast so booking in advance is essential. Alpaca Expeditions secures this ticket for you as part of every package, so you don’t need to worry.
What about the Inca Trail?
If you choose the 5 Day Lares Trek you will hike along the Inca Trail. You’ll need both an Inca Trail permit and a Machu Picchu entrance ticket. This permits are limited to 500 per day and sell out fast as well and were released in October 2025 so let us know if you would like to book a hike so we can secure your dates. Alpaca handles these permits on your behalf.
Restrictions: Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable, and are tied to your specific passport information.
February closure: The Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February every year for conservation and maintenance work, with no permits issued during this time.
Experience the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu in a new, relaxed and exclusive way.
Lares Trek to Machu Picchu: A particularly special adventure, the Lares trail takes the road less traveled to Machu Picchu.
The Lares Trek offers a unique and rare perspective into the true Andean lifestyle, as trekkers walk through remote villages and visit family homes for an intimate look into the culture and customs of our locals. Trekkers will also get to soak in famous natural thermal baths, trek past waterfalls, and visit the salt mines that make up a significant portion of the local economy. And, of course, witness the sacred ruins of Machu Picchu!
Highlights: Natural hot springs, striking salt mines, remote villages, connection with locals, Machu Picchu
Considerations: Since you are hiking in the Andes, this is one of our coldest treks. Please be prepared with lots of warm layers.
Difficulty: While all treks in the Andes are challenging, this hike moves a bit slower than others making it a favorite of our youngest hikers.
Season: Year-round.

Why 1,000s Of Climbers Trust Us To Successfully Hike The Lares Trail
Our goal at Alpaca Expeditions is to create the best experience for all of our clients. We’ve helped hikers from across the world hike across the Lares Trails with the greatest views of Machu Picchu and experience a journey that will be remembered for a lifetime.
1. Limited Permits – Book Early

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
What is the best Month to hike the Lares Trail?
Both the Lares Trek and the Lares & Inca Trail Combo are best hiked in the dry season April–October. You’ll enjoy clearer skies and drier trails.
During the wet season (November–March), rain is heavier, especially on the Inca Trail section of the combo trek.
If you prefer fewer crowds the shoulder months April and October are the perfect time to visit.
Does the Lares Trek go to Machu Picchu?
Yes. Both routes end at Machu Picchu.
- The Lares Trek finishes with a train ride into Aguas Calientes and a guided tour of Machu Picchu the next morning.
- The Lares & Inca Trail Combo takes you through both trails, so you enter Machu Picchu via the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku) before your guided tour – the iconic experience unique to the Inca Trail.
Do you offer group and private tours?
Yes. We offer both small group treks and private tours. Group treks are perfect if you’d like to share the adventure with other travellers and keep costs lower. Private tours are ideal if you prefer a more personalised experience, choosing your own dates, pace, and level of comfort. Both options include our full team of professional guides, porters, and chefs to ensure your trek is safe and unforgettable.
Do I need a permit for the Lares Trek?
- Lares Trek: No government permit is required. You do require a permit to access Machu Picchu so early booking is advised.
- Lares & Inca Trail Combo: Yes, an Inca Trail permit is mandatory. These are limited to 500 per day and sell out months in advance, so early booking is essential. We secure these permits for you.
Do you offer additional excursions before or after the trek?
Yes. Many trekkers add on adventures such as Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, the Sacred Valley, or Cusco city tours. These can be arranged before or after either trek. For those combining the Lares with the Inca Trail, extra time in Cusco before your trek is recommended to acclimatise.
What’s the weather like on the trek?
Both treks cross high mountain passes and cloud forest, but there are small differences:
- Lares Trek: Coldest temperatures can drop below 0°C / 32°F, warmer and more humid as you descend into the jungle.
- Lares & Inca Trail Combo: Same mountain conditions as above, plus the Inca Trail section where weather is a bit more stable but still variable. Dry season (April–October) is the most reliable for both routes.
What kind of food can I expect on the trek?
Our chefs prepare fresh, hearty, and delicious dishes using local ingredients to keep you energised throughout the trek. Expect a mix of Peruvian and international cuisine – soups, rice, pasta, fresh vegetables, chicken, beef, and even vegetarian or vegan options on request.
Each day includes:
- Hot breakfasts to start your trek strong
- Nutritious lunches with plenty of variety
- Three-course dinners served in a dining tent
- Snacks & tea time with hot drinks and treats
We happily cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs with advance notice.
